• Artist and Author Maceo Montoya to Speak at Winters Friends of the Library Annual Gathering November 8

    Winters Friends of the Library (WFoL) will host their annual gathering on Thursday, November 8 at 6:00 p.m. at the Winters Community Library, located at 708 Railroad Avenue. Everyone is invited to enjoy a social hour with delicious hors d’oeuvres created by the Winters High School Culinary Arts class, a brief overview of WFoL activities over the past year, and a talk by renowned author, artist, and educator Maceo Montoya.

     

    The event will kick off the annual membership drive for the Friends of the Library. Anyone who joins or renews their membership at the event will be entered in a drawing for a special gift basket donated by Steady Eddy’s Coffee House and Roastery.

     

    Maceo Montoya grew up in Elmira, California, in a family of artists, including his father Malaquias Montoya, a celebrated artist, activist, and educator, and his late brother, Andrés Montoya, winner of the American Book Award for poetry in 2000. Maceo graduated from Yale University in 2002 and received his Master of Fine Arts in visual art from Columbia University in 2006.

     

    Montoya’s first novel, The Scoundrel and the Optimist (Bilingual Review, 2010), was awarded the 2011 International Latino Book Award for “Best First Book” and Latino Stories named him one of its "Top Ten New Latino Writers to Watch." Since then he has published several well-received novels and non-fiction works. Montoya’s paintings, drawings, and prints have been featured in exhibitions throughout the country as well as internationally. He has collaborated with other writers to produce several illustrated books.

     

    Montoya is an associate professor in the Chicana/o Studies Department at UC Davis where he teaches a mural workshop and courses in Chicano literature. He is also an affiliated faculty member of Taller Arte del Nuevo Amanecer (TANA), a community-based arts organization in Woodland, CA.

    Winters Friends of the Library is an all-volunteer organization with the goal of supporting literacy and lifelong learning in the community. Members have fun while organizing community programs and events and raising funds improve and expand library services. Everyone is invited to join and/or volunteer.
